Well written, and the story takes place outside the realm of the normal nautical fiction venues. It is part of a four book series, but is written in a way that it can be read as a stand alone volume. The author also explores the issues faced by a colonial officer from Massachusetts serving in the Royal Navy at a time when officers were beginning to be more the product of social status and influence.Product details

The ongoing struggle of Mainwaring with his nemesis unfolds in jungles filled with setbacks. I like that the characters adapt seafaring metaphors to land based situations. Gives it a ring of authenticity.
Enjoyed the second book a lot and look forward to reading the next book in the series. Hopefully he will be able to get the Frenchman that has caused him so much grief.All in all a good read.

Victor Suthren has established himself as a leading author of maritime fiction with this book. The continuing story of Lieutenant Mainwaring and his men is filled with action, good dialogue, and descriptions. Excellent Read!
An heroic sea tale complete with intrigue, individualism, and an unlikely but obvious bonafide homegrown leader to rescue the heroine and thwart the evil villain depriving the oppressors of incredible treasure!
Pretty much the same formula as the first book. Hard to have much respect or sympathy for the main character, who ignores orders, abandons his ship and makes bad decisions, all for personal reasons, but manages to get lucky in the end.
A more detailed review has been posted on the predictability of the plot progression . I would recommend the first book and leave the rest as it reads more like a comic book series or a B movie than anything else. I commend the authors effort though - I think a young adult audience would love this series
Although I did enjoy this read, not so much as the first of the series. My comments on "Royal Yankee" apply equally here. The reason I deducted a star is that in real life, we meet our foes, and either vanquish them or are vanquished, but rarely do they dog us forever. The author shoul invent new villains for each book, not preserve and resurrect the old ones. Also, I thought that the ending was a little flat.
